The largest segment of US trucking

Dry van moves most of America

If your freight is palletized, boxed, floor-loaded, or drum-packed and doesn't need temperature control or open-deck access, it ships in a dry van — an enclosed 53' (or sometimes 48') trailer. Dry van is the largest single segment of US trucking by volume. It's how almost everything you buy in a store got there.

Evergreen Shippers brokers dry van truckloads, partials, and LTL out of Spokane and across the Pacific Northwest every business day. Vetted carriers, OTIF-aware retail DC appointment scheduling, same-hour quotes, and a single all-in rate that includes fuel, tolls, accessorials, and POD.

Common questions

Dry van freight FAQ

A dry van freight broker matches shippers with FMCSA-authorized motor carriers operating enclosed 53' (or 48') dry van trailers. The broker handles rate negotiation, carrier vetting, insurance verification, dispatch, load tracking, and POD on a per-load or contract-lane basis. Dry van is the largest single segment of US trucking — if your freight is palletized, boxed, drum-packed, or floor-loaded and doesn't need temperature control or open-deck access, it ships dry van.

A standard 53' dry van carries approximately 42,000 to 45,000 lbs of payload, depending on tractor weight, fuel level, and how the load is positioned over the axles. Most palletized freight (24 to 30 pallets at 1,500 lbs each) tops out by cube before it tops out by weight. Heavy commodities like canned goods, paper rolls, or beverages often "weigh out" before they "cube out" — in those cases we spec the load to land legally on all five axles.

A 53' dry van fits 26 standard 48"x40" GMA pallets in a single-stack pinwheel pattern, or 30 pallets if pinwheel-stacked tighter or if the pallets are smaller (e.g., 48"x48" or 42"x42"). Double-stacked, capacity goes up further, but only if the product can take the weight on top. We figure pallet count, weight distribution, and stack-ability with the shipper before dispatch.

A 48' dry van fits about 24 pallets and is more common on East Coast lanes and certain retail accounts (older dock heights). A 53' dry van fits about 26 pallets and is the modern over-the-road standard — ~99% of long-haul dry van capacity is 53'. Unless your dock specifically requires a 48', you'll be quoted a 53'.

Yes. Walmart, Target, Costco, Kroger, Albertsons, Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon, and the regional grocery DCs all run strict appointment systems — missed appointments mean OTIF (On-Time In-Full) deductions, fees, or refused deliveries. We schedule the delivery appointment, confirm carrier ETA against the appointment, and re-book if upstream delay puts the appointment at risk. OTIF compliance is part of dispatch.

Yes. Less-than-truckload (LTL) moves are best when the shipment is 1 to 6 pallets or 1,000 to 12,000 lbs — the freight rides with other shippers' freight and routes through terminal networks. Partials (7 to 18 pallets, 12,000 to 30,000 lbs) often ride on a shared dry van directly without terminal handling, which is gentler on the freight. We quote both and let the freight characteristics decide.

Yes. Standard PNW lanes can typically be dispatched same-day or next-day during business hours. Truly tight pickups (under 4 hours) cost more and depend on lane density. Tell us the pickup window up front and we'll quote standard, expedited, or hot-shot options.

Yes. Evergreen Shippers, LLC operates under FMCSA broker authority MC#896325 with the required $75,000 BMC-84 surety bond, $1M commercial general liability, $2M automobile liability, and cargo coverage through Lloyd's of London. Every carrier we dispatch is FMCSA-authorized with verified BMC-91 insurance.
